The birth and enlightenment of Lord Buddha is celebrated annually on Wesak Day. In Kuala Lumpur, a stunning parade draws thousands of Buddhists, accompanied by colourful floats and chariots, who walk for 12 kilometres from the 125-year-old Maha Vihara temple in Brickfields, passing by other temples, and then back again . Devotees pray in the temples and light oil lamps to chase away the darkness from life, while procession participants carry lotus-shaped candles, a symbol of purity, and chant Buddhist mantras in unison, walking slowly beside the beautiful floats which feature colourful flowers and lights, and Buddha statues, of various sizes, religious poses and life stages . Non-Buddhists are also welcomed to join in the festivities and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of peace and harmony, befitting the multicultural nature of this cosmopolitan city.
