It was great to see this new info panel which has been erected on one of our local walks on the border of the #Ariege and #HauteGaronne departments. It takes you up on to a stunning ridge line where you may see vultures, eagles and falcons circling overhead as well as maybe spot chamois and numerous reptiles in the summer. The area is wonderfully rich in all sorts of wildlife and the views from the Cornudere ridge are stunning. Wish you were here?
Excuse the smallish pic, but it’s just what they provide! Delighted to have been selected by ‘Dragon’ Theo Paphitis as one of 6 small business winners on his Small Business Sunday #SBS initiative on Twitter! I am chuffed to bits that a highly respected entrepreneur and businessman such as Theo has recognised my growing business and given me such a valuable opportunity to bring it to the attention of a much wider audience. Thank you @theopaphitis!
‘Do you ever take it for granted there?’ It’s a question that I have been asked on several occasions. My answer is always the same. A great big emphatic ‘No way!’ The #Pyrenees take my breathe away and I never tire of these jaw-droppingly beautiful mountain views. How could you?! Then when you see one of Europe’s rarest birds of prey, the bearded vulture, as well as two red deer stags in the course of one spectacular hike.... well, I think you can understand why this is such a very special part of the world.
#tbt #throwbackthursday to some of the fantastic gun women’s #MTB weeks we’ve enjoyed here in the #frenchpyrenees. Giggles galore, encouragement, support, there’s something very special about women only #adventures. It’s always a huge pleasure for me to see new friendships being formed and for these to continue once the girls have returned home. Roll on our 2019 women’s weeks which are happening 20-27 July and 21-28 September. Fancy joining us? Drop us a line for further details.
If the forecast is to be believed the Pyrenean landscape will be turning brilliant white this weekend!⠀ ⠀ The central #Pyrenees are expecting quite an exceptional early season dump of snow, one that we're hoping will lay down a good base for the coming winter season.⠀ ⠀ Are you excited about the imminent arrival of winter or does the thought of snow leave you cold?
Great memories of a great bunch of #adventurequeensuk. ⠀ You can accomplish way more than you think. Bowled over by this gift and the kind words left by the girls whose #PYRadventures came to an end today. We’ve enjoyed some amazing times in the mountains together this week and seen some stunning wildlife in the company of one of our top guides, Marc. Yesterday was spectacular with a herd of 40+ chamois, red deer, roe deer, grey partridge, Griffon vultures and, la cerise sur le gateau, a Lammergeier too! Just wow! I can’t wait until next year when we’ll be welcoming more #adventurequeensuk to this beautiful part of the world.
Yesterday was one of those exhilarating, atmospheric days in the #Pyrenees mountains above Luchon with three of my fellow intrepid #adventurequeensuk With snow down to 1900m we stayed clear of the high mountains and instead enjoyed a fantastic lower level hike with one of our top guides, Marc. It was the most incredible day for #wildlife as we saw numerous small herds of red deer, a rare Lammergeier and were also treated to a low fly past by some griffon vultures! What a day! Love our beautiful Pyrenees.
What a pleasure to spend a few days up in the high mountains of our beautiful Pyrenees with a great bunch of adventurous lasses. The weather was wild which just added to our adventure! Our top guide Rolfe was great company and kept everybody entertained with his stories. Can’t wait for our next group of #adventurequeensuk to arrive on Saturday. With snow forecast for Sunday I think adventures are guaranteed 😉😀❄️🏔
Excited to be spending a couple of days across the chain in the Aragon region of Spain, working on a top secret new adventure with top guide Marc. Yes, we’re expanding! The pic is of our base for the next couple of nights, a sweet little hotel in an exceptional setting. See if you can guess from the photos I’ll be posting over the next couple of days what the theme of this new and exclusive adventure will be. I know you’re going to love it! #PYRadventures #lipsaresealed
#MondayMotivation Nina is just 9 years old. She'd never been #rockclimbing before. Her family chose this as one of their activities on their #familyadventure holiday with us this summer. I can tell you, Nina is one #gutsygirl! She scampered up that rock like a little monkey, out-climbing most of the boys! She worked out the moves and was determined to get to the top of every route. She was totally inspiring! Tag somebody in the comments who has inspired you recently.
We encountered these horses and sheep on our hike up to the Pic de Cagire yesterday. ⠀ ⠀ They’ll remain up in these high pastures until mid October when they will be taken back down to the valleys where they’ll spend the winter.⠀ ⠀ I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind being a horse, waking up to that view each morning!
#MondayMotivation Think you can't? Think again! You're capable of more than you think. One of the pure pleasures of my business is watching people push their boundaries and go beyond their perceived limits. #Rockclimbing is one family activity in which we see this year after year. Not only kids but mums and dads too challenge their head for heights and conquer their fear of falling. What challenging adventures did you enjoy this summer?⠀
They’re calling it an Indian summer but, to be honest, temps into the mid to high 20s C are pretty normal for early Autumn in the Pyrenees.⠀ Today the mountains were calling and with perfect conditions out there, we had to heed their call. It’s easy to dismiss what’s right on your doorstep, but the Pic de Cagire at 1912m is no pushover.⠀ It’s straight up, right from the off, with nearly 1000m of height gain in around 4.5 kms!⠀ ⠀ The views are always worth the effort though. Wish you were here for some #pyradventures?
Isn't it great when mums can get as much fun as their kids out of challenging themselves on something like rock climbing?! Jules wasn't sure to start with, but she soon learnt the ropes. The more routes she did the more her fears slipped away. I think that grin says it all!
#MondayMotivation “That was the most scary but the most fun thing I’ve ever done in my life!” It took a lot of courage for Yin to do the rope swing on the tree climbing experience this summer. She’d watched her 3 young daughters who are aged 8-12 jump fearlessly off the platform and she finally built up the nerve to do it herself! Her eldest daughter was the first to give her a hug when she was back on the ground, fantastically proud of her mum who’d overcome her fears. #feelthefear and do it anyway! What’s your next adventure?
It’s always a pleasure to spend some time in #luchon, a beautiful spa town known as la Reine des Pyrenees, the Queen of the Pyrenees. This area is the base for the majority of our adventure and multi activity hols. There are numerous superb restaurants serving delicious local specialities, a fabulous spa facility housing the only natural hammam in the whole of Europe and, in the summer, a gondola for hikers and mountain bikers up to the Superbagneres plateau. In winter, you can enjoy not only piste skiing but snowshoeing, XC #skiing, winter canyoning and loads of other fun stuff. Come and play!
After an action-packed summer season, the chief adventure creator was very much in need of some time out in the mountains. The mountains of the #Ariege #Pyrenees were just the ticket yesterday, a peaceful, unspoilt environment, simply perfect for a mini adventure to recharge the batteries. A 12km hike with nearly 1000m of climbing restored the spirit and left the body physically tired, but in a very satisfying way 😃 Where’s your next adventure?
Well, what a summer season that was! It was a record summer for us in the #Pyrenees as we arranged #PYRadventures of all sorts for families, groups and individuals. It was an enormous pleasure for us to share this beautiful part of the world with like-minded adventure-loving people and to see them fall in love with the area too. When will you be coming to play?!
Off-road scootering. It’s been a big hit this summer. It’s tempting to think of the scooter as an easy peasy kids activity. But I can tell you it’s no pushover when the descent paths and tracks are loose and dusty dry as they were for our dads and lads descent yesterday!
Another morning out with top guide Jerome, this time in the Oô river gorge near Luchon with our dads and their lads from Israel. The water level is perfect and I think it’s safe to say they had an amazing adventure as they jumped, slid and zip wired their way down the beautiful river course! I love to see people having so much fun on their Pyrenees holidays 👍😃
This. This is why we’re so proud of our choice of activity providers for our family multi activity holidays. They really care! 9 yr old Olivia needed a bit of extra encouragement and support when we went down the beautiful Miraval river gorge in Spain last week. She doesn’t yet have the confidence of her older brother and sister. Top guide Jerome didn’t hesitate. He’s one of the best!
What a great morning with top guide Olivier and clients, the Wareham family who chose rock climbing as one of their multi activity holiday activity options. I believe son Josef had been looking forward to this part of the holiday more than anything else as he already climbs back home! Bonus of the day was another opportunity for me to don the rock boots and do some climbing too. Hoping this is now going to be a regular thing! More please! 👌😃
The fearsome Pyrenean ‘patou’, the animal of choice to protect flocks of sheep and herds of cows in the mountain pastures. The heat had obviously got to this one! He barely budged as we walked on by!
What a fun afternoon river walking with these families and top guide Marc today! The Ger river is still running well, carrying crystal clear mountain water from its source in bear country all the way down to the mighty Garonne. This an unspoilt stretch of river and a great place to be on a hot summer’s day. No wonder river walking is one of this summer’s most popular activities with families on a multi activity holiday!
The refuge de Venasque sits in a beautiful spot beside a little lake up at 2200m, just a short walk from the Port de Venasque which is the border with Spain. This is our preferred refuge for the ‘night in a refuge’ experience which families are enjoying on their multi activity hols this summer. The words ‘digital detox’ have never been more appropriate! Wish you were here?
It’s a good old hike up the zig-zagging path from the hospice de France to the little refuge de Venasque.⠀ ⠀ It was a hot day last week when I joined client Adrian and his son Fin on their hike up to spend the night in the refuge which is looked after by a lovely young family. ⠀ ⠀ You can stay in the refuge on a full board basis on one of our multi activity holidays and take the opportunity to pop over the port de Venasque to discover the beautiful Spanish side of the mountains.⠀ You want your family to be reminded of what being off-grid is really like? This experience is for you!
When temperatures climb the cool meltwater of a Pyrenees river is the place to be. We’re lucky to work with an excellent local guide, Marc, who has sniffed out some superb sections of river in the area to provide a memorable river walking experience. It’s a great family adventure that’s open to children as young as 7 years. You don’t need me to tell you it’s one of the most popular activities on our summer multi activity holiday. Wish you were here?
River #canyoning fun with @curlybeachmama1 and her adventurous tribe yesterday! The water levels in the rivers of the Pyrenees are still excellent as snowmelt continues to come down from the high mountains. Two of the families that are arriving tomorrow for a week of multi activity fun will be enjoying these cooling waters next week! Wish you were here?
I had the pleasure of following along with a bonkers family today as they descended the Oô river gorge here in the central Pyrenees. Isn’t it funny how the youngest are always the most fearless and will throw themselves at anything?! It was a fun morning and that cool clear water looked oh so tempting as temperatures climbed into the 30s. Wish you were here for some #PYRadventures?
Watched #TDF2018 live today after #cycling up #coldementé - what a day it was!⠀ ⠀ We look forward to the #TDF circus every year here in the #FrenchPyrenees. It's an amazing spectacle and a cracking event for cyclists and non cyclists alike.⠀ ⠀ It's impossible to describe the atmosphere. From the spectators encouraging cyclists as they climb the cols, the publicity caravane throwing out TDF merchandise, the building tension as the first helicopters arrive overhead, then the arrival of the riders ....it's quite a buzz. You have to be there! We're now taking pre-bookings for our guided TDF cycling week in 2019. DM us to register your interest. Final dates will be released in October. It's going to be a cracker!
#TDF2018 in the Pyrenees -3 days and counting! ⠀ ⠀ In the meantime we’ve been getting in the mood thanks to the Campilaro 3 day #cycling sportive which has been based in Luchon and takes in most of the major cols of this area of the French Pyrenees over its 330kms.⠀ ⠀ You’ve never heard of it? That’s because it’s low key, exclusive and limited to less than 200 riders!⠀ ⠀ Wish you were here?⠀ #PYRadventures
The Arlos river canyon is very jungle-esque, with its lush vegetation and moist environment. It makes for a unique atmosphere when you’re making the descent! This is the location for our introduction to canyoning experience, open to children over the age of 7 with the only proviso being that they can swim. So far this is proving to be the most popular activity choice with families this summer with river rafting coming a close second. Not surprising with the hot weather we’re having in the Pyrenees at the moment!
Tree climbing is proving very popular with families who’ve chosen a multi activity holiday in the Pyrenees this summer. It’s not just the kids who love the challenge. It’s the mums and dads too! We love helping people rediscover their inner child ;-) Wish you were here?
We currently have three outdoors-loving families here in the Pyrenees enjoying an action-packed multi activity week. They all wanted to do river canyoning which is the ideal activity choice on these hot summer days. Their introduction to #canyoning experience was fantastic fun thanks to super guide Jerome. Look at those smiles!
The cafe stop. It’s part and parcel of road cycling culture in the Pyrenees. Yesterday was just the perfect day for #cycling in the foothills and the chilled beer did its job in cooling me down mid ride. What’s your favourite mid ride refreshment? ... ... ... ... ... #PYRadventures #womencycling #cyclingwomen #bikegirl #velosister #lovemybike #bikesgirls #strongher #cyclelikeagirl #womenonwheels #lovecycling #cyclingshots #ridebikeslovelife #activelife #cyclinglife #instacycling #roadcycling #roadcyclingpics #cyclingphotos #roadbikepics #loveyourride #pyreneesofinstagram #instabike #fromwhereiride #outsideisfree #thisismygym #jointheride #enjoytheride
It was uplift day today for our women’s #MTB group and they were treated to one of my fave views from the Superbagneres ski station. From there it’s a cracking and varied descent back down into Luchon. When you’ve come down to the Pyrenees for a #MTB holiday with your mates but you’ve tweaked your back and have to miss day 1, a dip in an icy cold river up in the mountains is great therapy! Sam was joined by Ros who broke her collar bone 2 weeks ago. What a pair of wounded soldiers they are!⠀ ⠀ It was lovely to have the opportunity to show them one of my very fave spots in the Luchon area. Not being able to ride was far from their minds after some chilled beer and ice cream ;-) ⠀ More pics to follow.⠀
I make no apologies for filling our feed with horsey pics! Horse riding is such an important part of life here in the Pyrenees and the Merens is such a beautiful breed, don't you think? ⠀ ⠀ They are native to the central French Pyrenees but very reminiscent of the British fell pony. On our horse riding holidays we use stables that breed both these and the Castillon horses which are also native to the area.⠀ ⠀ Most of the herds are now back up in their mountain pastures where they will stay until October, although the trekking stables keep a small number of horses back down in the valleys for the multi day treks.⠀ ⠀ Check out the link in our bio for info on our Pyrenees horse riding holidays.⠀
Do check out the latest issue of this completely free online mag! This is an especially fantastic issue as it has an article by yours truly in it :-) What are you waiting for? #PYRadventures #adventuretravel Reposting @adventuresmag: ... "The Summer Issue is out! This Merens horse is all kitted out for a multi day riding holiday in the French Pyrenees. ⠀ ⠀ The breed is native to the Ariege Pyrenees and is perfectly adapted to the rugged mountain terrain.⠀ ⠀ They are sure footed and good natured, the ideal mount for a multi day horse riding holiday in the mountains.⠀ ⠀ See link in bio for info on our 2019 horse riding holidays.⠀⠀
Riders enjoying their horse riding holiday, accompanying the herd of Merens mares and foals on their transhumance back up to the high mountain pastures this weekend.⠀ ⠀ The trek passes through little foothills villages where the horses and riders can take a well-earned rest before getting on their way.⠀ ⠀ It's always a party atmosphere with refreshments provided by willing volunteers.See link in bio for our 2019 dates for the Transhumance horse riding holiday adventure.
I love my job! It’s the occasion of the Transhumance in the Pyrenees this weekend when livestock is transferred from the valleys up to their high summer pastures. Always a good excuse for a celebration and the Ariégeois do it better than most. I spent a wonderful couple of hours today photographing and videoing the Merens mares and their foals as they took a break in Castillon-en-Couserans before continuing on their journey. Tomorrow we shall be rejoining them and the accompanying horse riders for the final push up to the estives.
While many of the Pyrenees cols remain shut, the peaceful lanes in the foothills provide a great training ground for the road cyclist.⠀ ⠀ This is where you can really work on your endurance, clocking up the miles on well maintained, undulating back roads, passing through quaint villages, always with those stunning mountain views as a backdrop.⠀ ⠀ But don't take my word for it. Come down and see for yourself. We can arrange accommodation, airport transfers, route suggestions, even full support if required. There's no better time for checking out the road biking in the French Pyrenees.
Yet more snow has fallen in the Pyrenees over the past few days. It's been a cracking winter for lovers of snowsports and it just seems to be going on and on!⠀ ⠀ Are you fed up with winter, desperately hoping for some warmer, sunnier days? Or are you desperately squeezing every last minute of snowy fun out of it before it all melts?
Penny contemplating the final push up to Pic Saillant in the heavy fresh spring snow. A grand day out on the snowshoes. Over 1000m of ascent but with blue skies and warm sunshine and not another soul in sight, we hardly noticed the effort, honest ;-) ⠀ ⠀ More snow is forecast over the coming days so it's not too late for more snowshoeing action in the Pyrenees mountains. Bring it on!
