Duo of Fleuries. 71 years apart, but both showing Fleurie brilliance. Supports my feeling that this is one of the 3 crus to focus on. The 45 was still fresh upon opening, a touch of dirtiness and funk, but for a 73 year old Beaujolais, it was remarkable. WWII era wine also. Still with strawberry and cherries on both the nose and palate but finish wasnt that long. And it got a bit funky after a short while. Metras always stands out as a punchy yet fresh and juicy. I have come to realise that for old Bojo, sticking with Morgon, Fleurie and Moulin-a-Vent reduces the possibility of disappointment. But perhaps it was the not so nice 1981 vintage. Condition of wine was fine but, rancid tea, tar, some black fruits, very stewed plums and decaying flower petals is pretty much what i got from this. Drinkable but not particularly pleasant. Oh well.. the quest continues... #wine #winedinner #beaujolais #julienas #drouhin #maisonjosephdrouhin @maisonjosephdrouhin #oldbojo #bojo #drinkgoodbeaujolais #winedinner #stuffidrink
Fun and casual lunch with 5 quite different bottles of wine. A vibrant and juicy Ulysses Collin Blanc de Noirs started things off before we went to the 100% Xarel-lo from @terroirallimit, made in just under 700 bottles. Nice minerality driven by a flinty profile with punchy aromatics and weighty on the palate. Outstanding white wine for me. The 55 Moulin-a-vent was expectedly outstanding - there really is no limit with old Beaujolais. We had the 2005 Comte Armand with the winemaker himself Benjamin and it was an expected bottle. Young, almost closed on the palate at first but silky tannins and layered complexity unlike other Pommards of any producer I have had. Beautiful nose of dark fruits, pepper, spices, slightly gamey and really in perfect shape. Probably 5-10 years too young to drink now. The Beau Paysage I have had the exact bottle off some time back but this was powerful on the nose. Candied, explosive and bright... needs 30 years for that to mellow I think.
