Low Waste When Travelling . Let's talk trash. After listening to the Real Talk Radio episode (@realtalkradiopod) with Kirby and how she conducted a trash audit in an effort to live a lower waste life, I was inspired to do the same. My situation is different in that I'm travelling but I was curious nonetheless. . The majority of my waste comes from organic matter (currently, mainly tangerine peels, banana peels, and date pits). I also throw out a number of plastic and paper bags that contained olives or dates and were slimy/sticky, or were grease-stained and ripped. Whenever we go to souks/markets I always bring reusable bags, but sometimes the vendors refuse to use them (whyyy!?). . Trash is a HUGE deal in Morocco. It's EVERYWHERE. Not just in the gutters, but in fields, in forests, on pathways... It's remarkable. I realise that aspiring to live low/zero-waste is a privilege and an option not accessible to many (especially here), so I'll continue to be that crazy foreigner who adamantly refuses bags, and who carries a huge loaf of bread away in her hands rather than in yet another wrapper. 😅 . Where does the majority of your trash come from? . . . . #morocco #visitmorocco #realtalktravel #femaletravelbloggers #budgetbackpackers @femaletravelbloggers #slowtravel #rtwtrip #rtwtravel #worldwanderers #backpackersintheworld #travelawesome #myhomeisabackpack #sustainabletravel #responsibletravel #ethicaltravel #responsibletourism #ethicaltourism #conscioustravel #kindtravel #responsibletraveling #lowwastelife #zerowaste #letstalktrash #leavenotrace @leavenotracecenter #lowwastetravels #zerowastetravels

Azrou | Barbary Macaques . Today we went for a hike in the Cedre Gouraud forest. In addition to having some incredible green and lush cedar trees, this forest is also home to several families of Barbary Macaques. . We were fortunate enough to encounter two separate groups during our hike. The first group of nine kept to the trees, while the second group of seven roamed the forest ground not too far away from where we stood. The biggest of the group even came within a metre of us (no doubt he wanted some of our lunch!) . Unfortunately there are several families of these endangered monkeys that stay close to the car parks. Touts nearby sell bags of peanuts to give to the monkeys, and because of this they've been habituated to steal food from humans leading to cases of obesity, dental disease and loss of 'monkey habits' such as grooming, playing, and searching for (actual) food. Peanuts are not food for monkeys! It seems silly to have to say this in this day and age, but DO NOT FEED THE WILDLIFE. Ever. Even if they're cute and cuddly and eat out of your hand. *End rant* . Have you heard of the Barbary Macaque? (They're the same species as the famous monkeys on Gibraltar - who have also been conditioned to steal from humans... 😔) Have you ever seen a monkey in the wild? . . . . . #morocco #visitmorocco #azrou #cedregouraud #barbarymacaques #realtalktravel #femaletravelbloggers #leavenotrace @leavenotracecenter @femaletravelbloggers #slowtravel #rtwtrip #rtwtravel #respectthewildlife #donotfeedthewildlife #worldwanderers #backpackersintheworld #travelawesome #myhomeisabackpack @she_explores #sheexplores #womenwhohike #sustainabletravel #responsibletravel #ethicaltravel #responsibletourism #ethicaltourism #conscioustravel #kindtravel #responsibletraveling #BeAlpha #alphagang
Travel Day in Morocco . 7.00 - awakened by the call to prayer over the loudspeakers 7.45 - finally convince myself to leave the warmth of the bed (and its four thick blankets) 9.00 - breakfast in the hostel lounge (fill up on bread + spreads (aka a whole lotta peanut butter + jam) 10.00 - finish packing up, check out of the hostel, and mosey down to the bus stop on our sore and blistered feet 10.45 - negotiate with the taxi drivers to take us all the way to Marrakech (instead of waiting for the cheaper local bus) 12.00 - arrive back in the big city. Take out dirhams (we were down to our last 50dh! [~€5!]). Bus to the main station. Stock up on fruit and bread. Immediately get hounded by touts wanting to put us on the bus leaving to Essourira RIGHT NOW!!! Ignore them and proceed to barter for tickets to Beni Mellal. 2.00 - Bus finally takes off (after having revved the engine and honked the horn for the last half hour). We watch a woman continuously spit into the aisle and another scream to the heavens on her cell phone. Lunch is an avocado + olive sandwich (not bad). 5.00 - arrive in Beni Mellal. We are the *only* tourists here. Go about finding a place to sleep tonight. Check out three hotels before blindly following Maps.Me to a Guest House that doesn't exist. We ask a young woman if she knows of any such place, she says no, then, "welcome to Morocco!" 6.30 - go back to a previous hotel. Watch a boy on rollerblades hitch a ride holding onto a big cargo truck on the main street. Settle our stuff in the room. 7.30 - dinner is salad (rice, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes), a big pile of beans, bread, and french fries; all for 27dh (<€3). We try to feed the street cats but they want nothing to do with our meat-free offerings. 8.00 - back at the hotel for the night and attempt to plan our next days in Fes. . How was your day today? 😊 . . . . . #morocco #visitmorocco #realtalktravel #minimalisttravel #backpacking #slowtravel #rtwtrip #worldwanderers #backpackersintheworld #myhomeisabackpack #rtwtravels @she_explores #sheexplores #womenwhoexplore #sustainabletravel #responsibletravel #conscioustravel #kindtravel #travelwithpurpose #openmyworld #ourtraveldiary

Today we made a side of the road stop for petrol. As I waited, I noticed we were in front of a hardware store, and I needed super glue to fix my glasses. You don’t need to know the language to pick out the glue on the shelf. With the help of my friendly local hardware store owner, he snipped the tip off the glue, a normally mundane task became a connection. And we learned how to say happy new year in Vietnamese. Real Talk // Todgha Gorge . We've seen some pretty incredible landscapes here in Morocco. I love taking pictures, and I enjoy sharing them here, but it's easy to bypass the mundane moments in favour of beautiful scenery. . The truth is, for as exciting and eye-opening as Morocco has been for us, it's also been really hard. The culture is a totally new experience, the different language(s)* make it hard to communicate, and we've been neglecting our health (mental & physical) as we learn to navigate this bustling country. . *Most Moroccans speak French and a dialect of Arabic called Darija. But there's also Berber languages - with different dialects which vary depending on the region. . So, in a break from stunning views, I present to you a photo from two tired and dusty full-time backpackers. Legs up the wall following our 7km hike this morning, laundry done in the tiny bathroom sink hung out to dry, exploded packs with clothes and random crap all over the room (#bagbed), and 5 blanket layers b/c even though it gets up to 20+C in the afternoons, it's often chilly at night and the buildings lack insulation. Not pictured: nearly a whole used toilet paper roll b/c the endless diesel fumes and dust have made my nose a never-ending snot fountain, an empty box of dates (they are grown here and are delicious, but we ate 1kg in less than a week and now need a break), and mountains of orange peels and peanut skins because these two items have quickly become our go-to snacks but now we're out and nowhere near a market/store. . Tl;dr, Morocco is beautiful, but we've been struggling (and I've produced more snot than what I thought was humanly possible). I'm going to keep sharing photos of the stunning places we visit, but hope to keep it real now and again because I'm human and long-term travel can be hard sometimes. 💕 . . . . #morocco #visitmorocco #todragorge #todghagorge #realtalktravel #longtermtraveller #fulltimetravels #minimalisttravel #shewhowanders @sheisnotlost #femaletravelbloggers @femaletravelbloggers #backpacking #slowtravel #rtwtrip #welivetotravel #worldwanderers #kindtravel #travelwithpurpose #backpackersintheworld #myhomeisabackpack
When one is feeling a bit under the weather, I can think of no better place to be. The food speaks directly to your soul. 🔺Wonton noodle soup 🔺Dry pho. I like to say deconstructed pho. And tea. With this is the pandan green tea that you will drink all over Vietnam for free. It is delicious, thirst quenching, and refreshing hot or cold. 🔺Pho Bao. Hands down my favorite comfort broth. Strangely enough, it tastes just like home.
Kids all around the world want to be just like their mamas when they grow up. These sweet girls were doing a great job with their meal prep for the big party. When we see group cooking activities like this, it always reminds me of the women in my family preparing for holidays when I was growing up.
Dades Gorge, Morocco . Our taxi only went as far as the bottom of this hill.... It was a long (and chilly!) trudge up, but was it worth it? You betcha! . One of the most rewarding views I've had in a while! . Would you drive up a road like this?
