I love love love a good story, and you‘ll have a hard time finding an account more fascinating than the lives lived by the colorful characters of our past. 💯 The Gilded Age, has always particularly fascinated me. During this time period, everything was done so in excess.... the architecture was elaborate and over the top. The mansions in Newport are spectacular, all unique in their own way. Some are Rococo with baroque inspired elements, some French, some influenced by the Italian Renaissance.... you will literally discover all flavors of opulent architecture anchoring each block of iconic Bellevue Avenue. In the past, Newport was the quintessential destination for New York’s society to escape from the city for the summer. In a domino effect, one millionaire after another followed suit in exhausting efforts of commissioning the most spectacular ‘summer cottages’ that one could ever imagine. This idyllic little city by the sea essentially became a perpetual game of ‘one up’. The ‘win’ of the game was the ability to purchase and develop the most opulent, lavish residence, for the purpose of entertaining with hopes of solidifying a place in Newport society. Funny enough, Mark Twain coined the term ‘The Gilded Age’ as a satire to patronize the superficiality of the players in this time. I look at the day in age that we live in, and definitely see parallels between the two. I do agree with Twain about the absurdity, however I am so grateful for the legacy that it has left behind. In contrast to the superficiality of this time period, the Gilded Age also represents a time of progression, and entrepreneurship. Women during this time were extremely progressive and bold. They had finally discovered their voice in the world. One of my personal favorite spirit animals, Alva Vanderbilt, was a trailblazing pioneer for women’s rights and an active participant and advocate of the Suffragettes. The product to all of this excess is a perfectly preserved time capsule and an enchanting nod to our past.
