“The Man with the Halo” follows world three time world Olympian, four time world champion, and current Ironman world record holder Tim Don in the time after an accident that left him with a broken neck. The determined triathlete opted for a halo device that would hold his neck in place with titanium pins placed in his skull. Today a growing number of lawyers are creating empathetic biographical mini-documentaries, or "sentencing videos", to reduce their clients' prison sentences. Inspired by the storytelling techniques of traditional documentary film, some lawyers team up with independent filmmakers while others become filmmakers themselves. High School Prom in Flint, Michigan isn’t your average every day high school dance. #VCmember @canepari_til_i_die has been photographing Prom in Flint Michigan for the last three years and in 2016, he was the official prom portrait photographer at Northwestern High School. The goal with this work has always been to celebrate these young people. To show them in a way that doesn’t always highlight their struggle. The students from Northwestern High School are proud and strong, but also have undeniable odds stacked against them. The film sheds a powerful light on how the beautiful, remote islands of Micronesia, a US protectorate, contribute a disproportionate number of soldiers to the American armed forces. Looking for a way out of poverty, these Pacific Islanders leave their communities in pursuit of the American Dream. Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Cesar Chavez (with whom she co-founded the first farm workers union), becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. This doc, created in part by new #VCmember @jessedana, reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. This clip from an on-going documentary created by #VCmember @nchilders412 takes us into Donetsk, Ukraine. Through documenting the citizens of Donetsk and examining their daily lives compared to Pittsburgh, its American sister city- this project hopes to learn more about Donetsk and create a platform for a better understanding between East Ukrainians, Russians and Americans.
On February 28, 2017, 13-year-old Fatima Avelica watched her dad, Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, be detained by immigration agents. She pulled out her phone and started recording. The video went viral and Romulo was eventually released. With his immigration status still pending, this heart-wrenching—and heartwarming—short film follows the family a year later and comes from #VCmember’s @ggarciapardo and @oliviamerrion. “The Podkamieners” is a short film series on a group of Holocaust survivors from the same family, who were forced to flee their small town of Podkamien, Poland and hide in the woods at the peak of WWII. The films use rich and realistic animation juxtaposed with moving personal accounts. This series comes from #VCmember @skams, with beautiful animation by #VCmember @casey.drogin. Check out the latest film by #VCmember @nicholas_weissman for @time @redborderfilms. John Davis and Lorrie Brown, who run an architecture firm in Ojai, Calif., knew they were constructing a home in a dangerous spot when they decided to live on 27 acres in the hills of Ventura County, where the Thomas Fire destroyed more than 1,000 structures last year. But unlike many of their neighbors, the couple had a home to go back to after evacuations were over. They had designed it with fire in mind: rather than a typical wooden frame, the home has bones of steel. The filmmakers send a special thanks to @jonwoods. Watch the full film at the link in our bio!

A senseless hate crime took the life of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, an Indian immigrant in Kansas, in 2017. “Do We Belong” is the story of what happens after the news cameras leave. The film follows Kuchibhotla’s wife Sunayana Dumala and her fight to grapple with the question of whether America is truly her home. After a police shooting, the name of the victim so often disappears from the news as the days and weeks go on. The aftermath is of little interest to the media; filmmaker and #VCmember @erik_ljung’s new documentary ensures one name is not forgotten. Dontre Hamilton. He was shot 14 times and killed by a Milwaukee Police Officer in 2014. The award-winning documentary, @bloodatdoorstep follows the aftermath of Hamilton’s shooting for three years. After escaping war-torn Syria and losing his mother and four siblings in a bombing that left him injured, Ibraheem Sarhan and his father strive to make a new life in Winnipeg, Canada. This Op-Doc from The New York Times follows Ibraheem during his first week at a new school where 28 percent of the students are refugees.
