This is one of JMW Turner's “colour beginnings” – preparatory works which he used to plan out a picture’s basic structure, colour and light. Turner would work quickly, experimenting and mixing colours together on wet paper. . See ‘Bernard Castle’ in our #BritishWatercolours display before 16 December. Entry free. . During the First World War, artists got together at the RA to produce 'Dazzle' camouflage designs. Two model ships painted in these zig-zagging and curving patterns are still in the RA Collection. Dazzle was intended to protect ships from attack by enemy submarines not by hiding them – as in traditional camouflage – but by creating optical illusion to distort their appearance and make it harder to determine their course. . The shield on the left of this photo was created by the Wahgi people in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, and features a face that’s instantly recognisable to comic book fans. Phantom comics were first introduced to New Guineans by American soldiers during the Second World War, and in the 1970s they were translated and published locally. During fighting in the region in the 1980s, the tradition of making war shields was revived, often as hybrids of traditional designs with popular culture. As “the man who cannot die” and a hero with many forbears, The Phantom appealed to the Wahgi and their ideals of warrior virtue and ancestral power. This rare 19th-century Fijian necklace, on display in our Oceania exhibition, is made of whale ivory – each figure has been carved to follow the curve of a sperm whale’s tooth. In Western Polynesia, whales were seen as divine beings so were never hunted. Instead, only teeth from beached animals were used, after first following protocols to honour their sanctity. Whale ivory was considered extremely precious, and this necklace would have been worn by high-ranking individuals. . Image: Necklace, 1870s. White, ivory, fibre. 52 cm.
