Congratulations to #NewOrleans native Phillip Youmans on winning the top award @Tribeca Film Festival with his first feature film @BurningCaneFilm. 19-years-old Youmans is the youngest and first African-American director ever to win this award! In addition to the Best Narrative Feature Award, Burning Cane also took home the awards for Best Cinematography and Best Actor (#WendellPierce) at #Tribeca2019. #BurningCane received the New Orleans Film Society funded “Youth Grant” through #CreateLouisiana last year. Meet Jasmin Mara López @jasminmara, a Mexican-American filmmaker based in New Orleans. Jasmin is working on her first feature-length #documentary, #SilentBeauty, an autobiographical exploration of one woman’s family history with child sexual abuse and a culture of silence. Jasmin participated in our Emerging Voices Mentorship Program in 2017, which is designed to introduce filmmakers of color in #Louisiana to industry gatekeepers to help create a more #diverse storytelling landscape. New Orleans native @phillipmyoumans’ debut feature film @burningcanefilm premiered at @tribeca’s Narrative Competition last night! Congrats to Phillip, at 19-years-old, Phillip is also the youngest director ever to have a feature film premiere at @Tribeca! We cannot wait to watch @burningcanefilm in #NewOrleans! #BurningCane received the New Orleans Film Society funded “Youth Grant” through #CreateLouisiana last year.

We had an incredible ending to the series with "What You're Gonna Do When The World's On Fire?" followed by a conversation with film participants #JudyHill, @BigChiefKevinGoodman, #NatTurner, Sharif Amenhotep, #KrystalMohammad (members of the New Black Panther Party for Self Defense), and assistant director of the film, #AlexisFranco.
