One of my personal favorite images of 2018 was this one early in the morning of July 21st on the Vekol Valley Road overpass looking east. Asher and I had gone almost all the way to New Mexico earlier, and then raced back towards home as a huge MCS blew up and started blasting west and northwest. We raced ahead of it here and had only a few minutes to setup before it blasted us again with strong winds, dust and rain. It's rare (to me) for these kinds of MCS storms in the desert to move fast and have so much cloud-to-ground lightning as well. It's usually in cloud, back in the rain...so this night was such a treat. This is just a single exposure, around 20-25 seconds...and lightning was exploding everywhere. It was an intense barrage for hours, ones I like to call "widow makers" because they just seemed fast and deadly. #mop #mikeolbinski #mopphotos #instagramaz #see_arizona #igsouthwest #ig_stormclouds #earthfocus #earthpix #discoverearth #canon #stormhour #igworldclub #monsoon #storms #madwx #azwx #weownthenight_az #lightning
A fairly close strike on September 1st down northeast of Willcox, AZ. There are two upward streamers there as well. One thing that is of note on this shot and that I've seen a few times, is the ghost bolt on the right, which I guess is some kind of lens flare or artifact. Zoom of the streamers in my IG story!
Major thanks to my buddy Trey Greenwood for hitting the shutter button on my camera for this shot of myself, Lyla and Eli last summer on July 9th, probably the top day of the 2018 monsoon. Such a great chase, full of great pics, but I think my favorites are the ones of the kids on the truck and the dust storm behind them, and now this one as well. Great memories for us, I only wish Asher had been able to be along with us...we sure missed him on this day!
A sweeeeeeet supercell near Hoisington, Kansas back on May 1st, otherwise known as Tescott day. Before that tornado though, this storm was lit and stunning to watch!
A new short video of an amazing show of mammatus at sunset north of Denver last May 30th. Full video at the link in profile!
Not sure what took me so long to get to this one, but one of the more stunning scenes from last spring for me. Long chase on May 29th from north of Laverne, Oklahoma to here southeast of Ringwood. The colors went nuts at sunset and this supercell/shelf cloud looked all kinds of amazing. Had to bail shortly after this to meet up with tour guests in Colorado the next day.
August 1st I found myself racing up I-17 for some storm action and shot a few nice bolts around sunset west of Camp Verde. I ended up back in town and had to decide east or north, so I went north up the 17 and got really hosed on places to pull over and shoot with any good view. So the popular rest area north of town was the best place I could find, and I wandered over near the freeway to shoot back down I-17 to see what happened. Nice color in the sky and actually got a decent strike!
I have one more spot left for my summer monsoon workshops! $3100, five days, based out of Tucson, AZ. Here’s a photo from one in 2016. It’s a great time chasing and learning about photography and time-lapse! Message me if you are interested. August 9-13th.
An old favorite I looked at again thanks to my buddy @c_deangelis reminding me that yesterday marked seven stinking years since we road tripped to Joshua Tree and the Salton Sea. One of the most magical sunsets I've ever seen...the water and the sky looked like they were one, and this old dock straight out of Lord of the Rings was such a sick foreground. I am almost fuzzy now on the trip itself, but I think my buddies @chris_frailey, Doug Wise and Rick Young were all there. And Heath O'Fee Photography. Such a great time!
Only about five and a half months until haboobs return to Arizona. Can’t wait to get out there and shoot them again, not to mention a sprinkling of lightning 😍 #mop #mikeolbinski #mopphotos #instagramaz #see_arizona #igsouthwest #ig_stormclouds #earthfocus #earthpix #discoverearth #canon #stormhour #igworldclub #monsoon #storms #madwx #azwx #haboob #4runner #toyota
September 1st, the night that keeps on giving haha...so many fun lightning shots from that chase, here's one looking towards the dry lake bed near Willcox from near the Kansas Settlement. I got this on wide angle which I would have preferred, but it was set to ISO 2000 for time-lapse and the bolt just blew the crap out of the shot. This was fun despite wishing I had a tad more foreground. #mop #mikeolbinski #mopphotos #instagramaz #see_arizona #igsouthwest #ig_stormclouds #earthfocus #earthpix #discoverearth #canon #stormhour #igworldclub #monsoon #storms #madwx #azwx #weownthenight_az #lightning
My last chase of 2017 was June 29th and it finally ended with great structure, slow moving supercells and everything that had been missing up to that point. Having Lyla and Eli along was icing on the cake. Spent the night in Burlington and then chased from Punkin Center down into Kansas by nightfall. This was just south of Lamar, Colorado before sunset...a fantastic, slow moving supercell that we followed for almost two hours after this. Perfect ending to the 2017 season. Can't wait to see what's in store this spring!
Happy new year! A new year, and a new photo from...last year haha. September 1st was the best lightning day of the year for me and this was at the tail end...the storms were moving off towards the Chiricahuas and into an area that would be too hard to chase, so I stopped for one last shot here at an overpass northeast of Willcox overlooking I-10. The lightning was prolific and intense...this was just a 15 second exposure!
(Link in comments!) Here’s my annual look back at the year 2018 in photos for me! Family, weddings, road trips, photoshoots and….storms. Such a fun year overall, cannot wait to see what 2019 has in store. Hope you enjoy the look back!
Been an awesome year and yesterday morning's madhouse present opening was one for the ages. Love these people so much. Jina just put so much work into Christmas and even the past few days despite having an awful cold...and it was absolutely perfect. From our family to yours...Merry Christmas everyone!!! 📸 by @the.jason.williams
