This is a striped mullet, also known as a jumping mullet. These are vegetarian fish that swim along our shores year-round. And they taste really, really good. Many people consider these fish nothing more than bait. When we open, we’ll invite you to explore this and other underutilized species on our menu. /// Want to be the first to know when we open? Our bar front was installed today. This wood is Atlantic White Cedar, also known as juniper. Critical to eastern North Carolina’s development, juniper was over harvested in the mid twentieth century. Today, it is incredibly hard to find. This wood came from a tree that fell in Dare County during a hurricane a few years ago. The logger had to get a special permit to retrieve the fallen tree from deep in the swamp and mill the wood.
We found this moment of respite amidst the madness of construction last week. . This corner of our restaurant will be tucked away from the communal food hall seating. Perfect for intimate dinners or quiet working lunches. You could be sitting here in just a few months.
Repost via @localsseafood . Lots of folks have been asking for an update on our seafood supply, as well as how they can help. The short story: we will continue to buy seafood from North Carolina, mostly through suppliers in the northern Outer Banks. And we set up a GoFundMe to help purchase supplies for folks down east. Read the update and donate via link in our profile. #downeastrelief #downeast #florence
Thinking of our friends on the coast & hoping their families, homes, and communities weather the storm. These are just a few of the folks who make it possible for us to serve you North Carolina seafood later this year. . Fletcher O’Neal on his farm growing Devil Shoal oysters near Hatteras ➡️ Buddy T. on his shrimp boat in Manteo ➡️ Karen A. in front of the @coresoundmuseum on Harkers Island ➡️ Micah D’s Fresh Catch seafood in Wanchese ➡️ Adam Tyler of Core Sound Oyster Company in Jarrett Bay.
