The whitewater will hone your focus, test your wits, and scrub you clean, but not before long the glassy flats will lure your mind and nerves in an entirely different direction, that of peace and wonder and pure joy. Grand Canyon, August 2018, with some darn fine human beings. 16 days? Not enough. _ #screedlintheditch #grandcanyon _ @kokopellipackraft
Water flows freely where the Glines Canyon Damn once towered. Concrete rubble lines the beaches and coves. Hidden in the cliffs are pieces of twisted rebar – ferns and moss slowly overtaking. The Elwha remains one hell of a river, flowing from the heart of the wild Olympic Peninsula. _ @kokopellipackraft @adventurejournal _ With @mason_lacy & @lukefarny July 2017.
New bike day is the best day, keeps me feeling like a kid. The all new @yeticycles is one heck of a machine, and certainly held its own tackling thousands of meters of climbing and descending, day after day, crossing Chamonix to Zermatt last week. _ @yeticycles SB100 TURQ Edition @srammtb Eagle XX1 drivetrain & Guide brakes @rockshox Stealth Reverb dropper, Pike 120mm fork & Deluxe DebonAir shock @envecomposites m635 29” wheels & m6 stem
Chamonix to Zermatt crossing. Up and down, day after day, on ancient arteries of pristine trail through these storied mountains. Staying in small guest houses, bivying in old barns, stopping for pizzas and espresso... this was a new form of bikepacking for me. Not even remotely self supported, but completely relying on the incredible alpine infrastructure of the Swiss Alps. The Alps have been a formative place for me as a mountain biker and adventurer. Nearly a decade ago, I was racing in the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup, struggling to keep pace with the world’s fastest racer while battling it out on the steep, muddy, and rooty slopes that make up the majority of the world’s premier racing series. I learned to ride at an entirely new level that year, but throughout that transformative season I couldn’t help to look up into the high peaks and wonder what else was out there. To wonder what it would be like to travel by bike through the high realms of this incredible place with many of the worlds oldest and wildest trails strewn about. It wasn’t long after that I started venturing out farther and higher into them… which brings us to today. Excited to be headed out on an 8 day epic with French mad-man @titotomasi. Let the many gruling climbs and gasping descents ensue! _ Pictured: Leading out @richie_rude1 in Verbier, Switzerland. August 2011. When it’s hot, take a dip. Full summer cool down in the Olympic National Park while traversing the peninsula self supported by foot, ski, and packraft last summer. _ Be sure to check out the current @sidetrackedmag for a feature article with @mason_lacy’s words paired with my photos, as well as the current @adventurejournal for a more in-depth photo gallery of my shots from the expedition.
The fine folks over at @vitalmtb recently interviewed me for the Inside Line Podcast. We caught up on all things mountain biking, adventuring, and filmmaking – from my past life as a World Cup downhill racer to my current pursuit balancing adventuring and filmmaking. Peace and clarity found in the cool mist of the Tibetan hinterlands, a sweltering Sichuan summer raging on far below in the bug ridden bamboo forests. We drifted in and out of the mist, eyes ahead and two wheels below, encompassing these revered giants in this land of wonder. @bricemag @sam_seward #TheKoraFilm _ Sichuan, China / August 2017 _ @yeticycles @smithoptics @srammtb @rockshox @envecomposites @thule
An old tattered guide book collecting dust in a Bellingham used book shop had a photo quite similar to this on the cover. Mason picked it up, and showed it to Evan and myself. Fast forward eight months and there we were, dodging icebergs, skiing the biggest lines of our life, listening to the rumble of avalanches roll through the night, sipping warm coffee for hours on end as this magnificent landscape waved by, and having one hell of a good time with 9 of the best people I know. _ Tatshenshini & Alsek Rivers, May 2018 _ @nrsweb @outdoorresearch @alpinestartfoods @gorumpl @bigagnes_ @kokopellipackraft
So thrilled to finally see ‘Mountain’ a cinematic and orchestral masterpiece exploring humanities relationship with the highest places on earth, by director @jenpeedom with principle cinematography by @renan_ozturk @camp4collective @sherpascinema and narrated by @willem.dafoe. Honored to have been the stills photographer for the project, as well as a small part of the motion picture on either side of the lens. I can only imagine how wonderful this would have been to see with the live orchestral set from the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
‘RJ Ripper’ - The story of Nepal’s fastest rider, online now via the link in my profile. _ Special thanks to everyone who has left comments of encouragement and supported RJ in his campaign to race the @world_enduro in the coming years via his GoFundMe page. So cool to see the MTB and outdoor community step up to help each other out! We’re most of the way there. _ And thanks to @vimeo for an honorary nod with a Staff Pick! _ #RJRipperFilm
