[SWIPE] It’s finally cooling off a bit in LA as Southern California fall rolls in. Although it’s still warm, it’s a good time to start incorporating more earth tones into the wardrobe for a complimentary aesthetic for the season. Glad to finally get a chance to get this @toddsnyderny cotton sport coat off the hanger and paired-up with a heavy linen slack, 2-ply shirt, and woven penny loafers to accommodate the fluctuation in temperature throughout the day. Accessorized with a gift from the team at @harkerwatches (thanks!). What are you looking forward to wearing this season? #gqinsider #menwithstyle #fallfashion #LAstyle #harkerwatches #ad
16 years ago, two guys from Virginia met as freshman at @floridastateuniversity. 10 years ago they spent the seven days between their birthdays bar hopping, jumping into Westcott Fountain, and cruising through late night drive thrus and “birthday week” was born. Although the week has been shortened to a weekend, because adulting, it’s still just as fun to see friends turned family. Until next year ... #birthdayweek #sundayfunday #VirginiaMade #BFF
Probably the best part of our trip to Cuba was an intimate experience in Guanabacao. As our expert guide ushered us through Afro-Cuban cultural history, it was immediately apparent how our stories were connected through shared West African practices. After a short drive, we visited with a local Afro-Cuban family, where we prayed at a Santería alter, ate, drank, and laughed with what felt like distant family through shared ancestors. If you’re Black and traveling to Cuba, the experience in Guanabacao is a must! #cuba #afrocuba #afrocubanculture #globaljetblack #shotbyhf
This past year was as trying as any. With a cross-country move, new job, repeated death threats, 45’s non-stop nonsense, and the ongoing attacks against our very livelihoods, I was continuously tested. But, I learned more about political will, self-determination, love, and compassion than ever before. As I begin another trip around the sun, I feel much more clear about the path ahead. I feel more assured about what is most important as we continue fighting to get free. This last week in particular, taking in AfroCuban culture in Havana and Guanabacoa, gave me a deeper appreciation of our responsibility for one another, but also to ourselves. Here’s to forging forward with an ethic of self-care and self-love, not at the expense of care and love for others, but an ethic that doesn’t require a choice between the two. This is 34. This is the year.
Head over to @medium and check out my reflection on Charlottesville a year later. I name what I believe is the the truest culprit of extremist violence in our country, which will again be on full display tomorrow in Washington D.C. Read, engage, share. #Charlottsville #WhiteIdentityExtremism #BlackLivesMatter
90-degree heat with 30% humidity can only mean one thing: I made it to FL for my 3-week fieldwork and writing retreat. I’ll be spending the next few weeks working on a forthcoming book on the contemporary history and cultural practices of grassroots and community organizing undertaken by the @thedreamdefenders. While here, I’ve made a commitment to take a break from Instagram in order to limit the distractions and get focused. As any faculty member can tell you, this time is invaluable and hard to come by, so it’s important to take full advantage of being away from campus to get writing projects complete before the fall arrives. That being said, I’ll check-in with y’all in a few weeks. I’ll be posting some updates via Facebook and Twitter (same handle) to document some of the process if you want to follow me there. Until then ... #thisistheyear #flourish2019 #freedomisontheway #outofofficereply
#fbf About a decade ago I was introduced to @kenjisummers when he and my younger brother, @mjadavis_, were informally interviewing to become an undergraduate Grand Chapter officers for @kapsi1911. Together, with four others, they joined the 31st Administration as “The Second Koming” and I served as their advisor. Since that time I’ve watched both brothers grow into remarkably thoughtful, emotionally intelligent, and “fine and decent” men well beyond the frat. It was great to be back together in LA, to reminisce and imagine new futures as we attempted to digest @bootsriley’s #sorrytobotheryou earlier this week. #Achievement #ULI #KAPsi1911 #shotbyhf
