I always told my late father that I would make money out of my closet and help make our planet more sustainable, and this is why I invested in innovative companies to foster independency for consumers and make our lives easier, such as @farfetch and @villageluxe. I am glad I got to tell him about them even if they were in beta, before he died. And now with their accelerator program for start-ups, @farfetch is also helping to create the next generation of disruptive companies that by coincidence I also (by coincidence!) like @thewishi and @villageluxe. Not only am I thrilled about this program #dreamassembly driven by @snphair and their IPO, but also that @brownsfashion driven by @holli_rogers is doing pop-ups with another rental company I back, @worldarmarium. Who knows, with all these disruptive ideas, maybe one day I will travel without bags! But for sure thanks to @villageluxe, my girlfriends will be able to borrow my pieces such as this one-off reversible red and white @ChristopherKane dress. So proud of Jose Neves (here with another smart founder I have supported, his wife Daniela Cecilio)! I am so blessed to be part of this company. Thanks to @fcourt of @felixcapital, I got in a few years ago and this gave me an opportunity to introduce the man who many say is the Steve Jobs of fashion to @nat_mass, my dear friend and long-term business partner, after we sold Net-a-Porter in 2015. I knew Jose would appreciate and admire Natalie as he is a smart man, but also a man that backs and respects women. I don’t admire brilliant men if they're not nice to their teams, as brilliant as they can be. Successful 21st century companies have to have principles about honoring equality, empowering both genders, and be leaders that treat their teams with respect - something that Natalie and Jose have in common. Go @farfetch! (And so happy that two of my other favorite former-NAP women @holli_rogers and @snphair were there to ring the bell!) 🔔
Bravo to the brilliant Carolyn Dailey of @creative_entrs for bringing us together at the No. 10 Roundtable to discuss how to foster entrepreneurship in the creative sector. We had a great morning problem-solving an issue that's close to my heart! (Read more about the meeting on www.carmenbusquets.com)
MCM x 2 this week with these two curators and interior design gurus Carlos Mota and Rodman Primack. Full of details I love, this photo was taken during Couture Week in Paris at the @modaoperandi x @theelderstateaman dinner to celebrate the brand’s first range of tabletop goods made in collaboration with Rodman and founder Greg Chait’s longtime friend Rudy Weissenberg of RP Miller. #mcm #mondays #design
#tb #tepost at my home-away-from-home in New York @themarkhotelny with the incomparable hotelier Izak Senbahar! Hats off to the whole team behind this extraordinary place - especially @sarahsenbahar and @olordonnois777 (who I have known since he was in his 20s!), you all have so much vision! In his latest interview with @gg_magazine Izak says “My vision was to create a mecca for fashion, Hollywood, art, and business”. Read it in their current issue!
Happy 24th birthday to my dear first godson Daniel! I haven’t been in your life as much as I have been in your mother’s life, but luckily for you she is the best and coolest mom ever! She told me when you were a baby that “godmothers are there to spoil their godchildren”, and although I did spoil you when you were a kid with toys and games while we were in Venezuela, I feel I have to make up for all those years that I was not in Venezuela. Now that you are in NYC having a blast and challenged by your first serious job, I hope I can continue to spoil you for the years I missed you growing up in Venezuela... Welcome to NYC and I wish you the best - I love you very much and so do your parents - especially my dear karmic sister @fabiolagasperini ❤️
Goodbye summer! Being in nature as I have this season brings about my favorite state of mind and soul. Life is like the wind - unpredictable and can mess up your hair and everything around you, it even makes you lose your balance at times, but if you stand still, it can't mess with who you are and will even soothe and heal your emotions. If the wind is too strong or the emotions run in opposite directions such as grieving a death while falling in love, those contradictions can trigger a hurricane that changes your life forever. These summer winds have indeed changed my life and destiny forever, as sad and nostalgic I am for the great memories I have from my past, which I am grateful for as they made me who I am today. I want to only look forward towards this wonderful gift of having a new life that I was not even looking for, and move on. The most important lesson for me to really learn now is to be as flexible as air. That way, the wind can mould me and change me without causing more damage, adding to the grief that my body and heart suffered from the loss I had this summer.
#repost @anniethomson63 This summer, I am not only grieving my father, I am grieving for my country. The land where my dad wanted to live and die like his son, the place where I wanted to live and die. But my country is dying and no one cares anymore, only the Venezuelans. It was our bad luck to be one of the richest countries in the world only to be targeted by immense greed. Humankind is just not able to have a concentration of power and money in their hands, and our world is at risk of disappearing thanks to greedy people in power. It's time to wake up: one human being is never ready for absolute power. Extreme communism and pure capitalism have also failed us - neither is the solution. Just for fun: does anyone have a solution? My idea may not be the right one. Maybe it's time to realize that our political and democratic system is also failing us because we should not be voting for *one* man to run our countries - we should vote for a board of people to run our countries. Much like in business, where the chairman, CEO and teams are evaluated annually by their end-of-year performance. It is simply unrealistic fairytale thinking to continue to believe that one leader can solve the complex problems of each country. It is arrogant to think that just one man can come up with all the solutions and the right team. He will always choose the people who flatter him and his position of power - not people who will challenge him and tell him when he's wrong, because let’s face it, we are all wrong many times a day, we all make mistakes as humans and often don't learn from our mistakes. By the way thanks to @drvneumann we know this cover is 2 years old , we knew it was old but 2 years!!! Proof that nothing happens to change our country #prayforvenezuela #moreempathy #prayforourworld
I was surprised but grateful to find out that I’m receiving the Fashion 4 Development award during the First Ladies Luncheon, especially after my father's death as I will be honoring his principles. He taught me that I have been lucky - especially as a single woman - and that I have more responsibility to do good for others and our planet. It's always about the butterfly effect and paying things forward to impact as many people as one can. These events have made me even more committed to supporting earth conservation, humanitarian efforts, social progress and global artisans. As many of you know, I started supporting craftsmen and emerging designers in Cabus in Venezuela in the early 90s and in CoutureLab in London in the 00s where I supported many artisans. Over the past three decades, I have supported over 50 entrepreneurs who employ over 12,000 people, and partnered with a number of organizations to foster education in Latin America, Africa and Asia, and promote the things I believe in. Among them: the @wwf council to preserve nature and wildlife, the board of the British Fashion Trust to support new emerging talent, non-profits @elbi with @natasupernova and @afinsky or @glasswingi and @pacunam with Celina de Sola and Marianne Hernandez to preserve culture and foster social progress across Latin America, the @bhutan_nuns_foundation Foundation to promote gender equality, the Oslo Freedom Forum and TED Talks to inspire others and promote forward thinking, Donna Karan's @urbanzen vision and the widespread communities she help, the @lalelaproject and the youth they empower in Africa. And of course helping sustainability warriors like Livia and her @ecoage in spreading the message about the dangers of fashion pollution. I also never forget mind-body disciplines - something that was instilled in me from my parents. Empowering the self, people and nature is my passion, and thanks to this award and the wonderful people and bodies that have come into my life throughout the years, I am ready to step into a bold new chapter. The ceremony will be in NYC next month during the United Nations General Assembly - read more via the link.
Girls - they want to have fun! We celebrated in the style of the movie Coco in honor of my father, like Latinos do, with his favorite songs and dancing until the early morning. Celebrating after a death or other sad event should always be done to bring joy to the soul and feel closer to our loved ones 🙏🏻🙏🏻✨
Striking a pose with my talented girlfriends, and then I wonder how I hurt my knees...🤪🤪🤪
This year we went back in time during my 5-day birthday weekend in St Barths, celebrating the old days of my beloved Venezuela when we were all a great big happy family and dad and mom were the head of our clan. My extended family and friends came to create a series of new Polaroids and we mixed them with the old ones, making an edit of a juxtaposition of my old and new life, as after losing dad and slowly losing mom with Alzheimer's, I realized that the 'old me' chapter is coming to a close. So before I fully let go, and send off my memories into oblivion, I asked my friends to send me all old photos of my family. It's hard to say goodbye to 52 years and start anew! The soul is the same, but the body is so broken that one cannot stay the same person you were when one of your parents dies and another is fading. It's an interesting journey: life as an adult truly starts when you lose your parents as you know for a fact that no one else will ever love you as unconditionally as they did. In St Barths we all celebrated as adults and reflected upon beginnings and endings, and we felt more reunited with our lost parents, siblings and friends than ever. The fine line that separates us from them was no longer invisible for us...it was a birthday that felt complete and transcendent. ✨#happybirthdaytoall 💥
