This is one of my all time favorite stories. It’s timeless. It’s one of those stories I return to often. I hope it encourages you. . Comment below about something you’re working on and what you’re doing to steward it well.
Mother. . She has the toughest and most rewarding job on the planet. She works endless hours doing unseen things. She models grace and femininity with ease. She teaches by doing. She is a calm peaceful lake and a swift rushing current. She’s as gentle as a dove and as powerful as a lioness. She is taller than her stature. She is louder than voice. She is stronger than her frame. She is funny. She is courageous. She is faithful. She is caring. She is the mother of five beautiful daughters. . I’ve often said that if you want to know what @stephaniewalden carries in her heart... what talents... what gifts... what calling...simply look at her daughters and you’ll know who she is. They are the fruit of all she is and carries. She is the best mother I know. . Happy Mother’s Day!
Stephanie and I (and the girls) have been quietly working on this project together. We just launched a website www.awaldenfamily.com to host this video series #faithandfamily. . We couldn’t be happier to share these videos with other families. The website will host weekly episodes over the coming months. It also is a place where you can find our family blog, music we share, info on Seeds and Trees and other content as it’s created. . We’d be honored if you’d follow along and do all the “social” things... like, comment, share, etc. ☺️ . If you’re not following @stephaniewalden you may want to consider that now. ☺️ Her Instagram feed will host most of the info about this content weekly.
Creating Community vs Create IN Community . As a creative it is easy to cling so tightly to a vision we have that we actually squeeze the life out of it. Creatives want to surround themselves with people who share similar vision, appreciate aesthetic, the creative experience, etc. We call that creating community. . Therein lies the problem. We’re meant to Create IN Community. Not just create community. If we’re honest, we will succeed at creating community far faster when we bring others in to our vision. Go fast? Go alone. Go far? Go with others. . Seeds and Trees would have never happened, or become what it has, had I not Created IN Community. Here’s a few examples of decisions I made IN community. . Most people don’t know that our illustrators @thebraveunion initially turned down the job once I gave them my artistic feedback. They didn’t feel we would be a good fit or that they could work with me. My feedback was not constructive. It was destructive. It almost cost our partnership. I’m happy to say I apologized and gave them complete control over the design. It was then that they had permission to shine... and shine they did! . My dear friend @beaumdavidson suggested the following edit early on. (He may not even remember) Instead of “he carried a bag that hung on near his side” (my words), he said, “How about, he carried satchel slung low on his waist”. Beautiful. . Most important of all the additions was the willingness to accept a friends investment to launch the book in the first place. Without that friend, the book would likely still just be an idea. . Create IN Community requires humility. Create IN Community requires vulnerability. Create IN Community requires trust. . The payoff is extraordinary though. One of the payoffs is “community”. . Don’t hold on to your vision so tightly that you choke the life right out of it. What do you have that you can invite others in to right now? Who do you know that you can bring in to your vision to make it better... or make it happen in the first place. . Create In Community and you WILL Create Community... and all kinds of other beautiful things along the way. . Be careful what you water, for it will sure
Surrounded by beauty: . I’m a blessed man. I’m so grateful for these beauties. They’ve changed my life. Many years ago (when we just had 3) @stephaniewalden would say how it must have always been God’s plan for us to have girls. She would say how gentle I was... or sweet... or tender. Truth is... 1 by 1 they have changed my life. I wouldn’t be the man I am now without them. . I’m so grateful to have them around me all the time. It’s days like this, while I’m sitting in the airport, that I am overwhelmed with gratitude for their hearts and the opportunity that Stephanie and I have to teach them to cultivate a garden in their hearts. . What do you learn from your children? . 📷 cred: @lucassankey
The “what you water” shirt. Coming really soon. Scroll to see each version. . We love the design for this shirt by @george.cibu. Which t-shirt do you prefer? Black? White? Long sleeve? Short sleeve? I ordered one of each as a test) 😂 . The truth is... this phrase has become my mantra. It’s deep in the soil of my heart. It’s a constant reminder of my thought life. . Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow.
Believe. . Volume up. . @stephaniewalden and Ruby singing “Believe”, a song she wrote years ago for the girls to encourage them. The message is so simple. But, maybe you need to hear someone saying “You can do it” to you today? . This is actually an outtake... Stephanie asks Ruby if she wants to say anything to the people watching... and Ruby’s response is hysterical... and insightful. . You CAN do it... But, you don’t have to. . Link to the full song in Stephanie’s profile. It’s worth the few minutes to watch. . Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow.
Leading > Followers • So many of us are looking over our shoulders considering how to grow our “following”. (🙋🏻♂️#guilty). But, how often do we consider where we’re “leading” them. • Truth is... when we create something of substance and value, people respond. But it’s hard to lead with your head looking back over your shoulder. • There are cliffs ahead dear friends. There are loose rocks along the path of leadership. Be careful not to stumble along because you’re too focused on who is following you. • Our culture places so much value on the numbers. Jesus, himself, only had 12. I doubt he’d be disappointed at his numbers. His 12 changed the world. Create substance. Create value. Focus your efforts on those really responding. By the way... for all you moms and dads out there... your “12” may very likely be your children. 😉 • Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow.
Redding people ::: Book signing 📖 . Honored to be doing a book signing Saturday from 10-12 at our favorite local shop in Redding, @sketchandpress. I don’t know how you could live in Redding and not know about it. But, if you haven’t been there, come by and say hello on Saturday. . My first book, Seeds and Trees, will be on sale for $10 and I’ll be signing books. So, come by and get a copy for yourself or one as a gift. It will not likely ever be this price again. ☺️ . 100% of the proceeds on Saturday will go to my two daughters (Sterling & Elle) for their school fundraiser. So, buy 2. 😉 . Sketch & Press was the first store to carry my book. @amyrenee.miller has been a huge supporter of the book. So, even if you don’t get a book, take a look at her shop and support her. 😊 . Comment below if we may see you Saturday!!! 📷 cred: @amyrenee.miller
Big news! . Today marks a personal landmark for me with Seeds and Trees. We just surpassed 15,000 hardback units sold on Amazon! This has been such an incredible journey and I’m overcome with gratitude. . Blood, sweat, tears (and a lot of favor) have gone in to this project. We have so many people to thank. But, as a thank you to all of you who are local, we thought we’d offer this special deal through this Friday. . If you purchase a copy this week and pick it up locally (meet me somewhere)... the price is $10. I’ll even sign it if you wish. . Not to mention... all 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to support Sterling & Elle’s fundraiser for their school’s Color Run happening next month. . So, if you live in Redding and want a deal, comment below. This would be a great time to purchase an extra copy as a gift. ☺️ . Thank you to everyone who has purchased the book so far. Please comment below if you have the book and if it has impacted you or your home in any way. . Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow. . 💦🌱💦🌳
Change the code. Change your life. . How much of our current circumstances, good and bad, are simply a result of the program running in our ❤️ and 🧠? I’ll give you a hint... all of it. 💻 . Swipe to read the whole bit.
Vulnerability vs Transparency: . A wise man said that transparency is like living in a glass house with glass walls with a glass ceiling and floors. Vulnerability, however, is giving your neighbors a rock. . Our culture is growing increasing more comfortable with transparency. However, showing things were not proud of is not the same thing as inviting people close in to your heart in such a way that could cost you. . True connection comes with risk. Risk of being seen. Truly seen. Not everyone is ready for this type of relationship. And, to be honest, not everyone is deserving of knowing you at the depths. But, there are payoffs when “going there” with someone you trust or value. Truly being seen is a gift to yourself. And being willing to show your heart to someone else is a gift to them as well. . One thing I’ve been learning over the years is that the less I need approval or validation about my value from others, the more willing I am to be vulnerable. When our value is locked in... when our identity isn’t based on others opinions... when our security is sure, we can “risk” being more vulnerable. Vulnerability begets vulnerability. When we’re willing to be the courageous one in a relationship we are, in effect, extending permission to the one in front of us to do the same. We are setting a table for true connection. If the person reciprocates, great! If they don’t, no worries. Your identity isn’t based on their response anyway. 😉 . Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow. . 💦🌱💦🌳 . 📷 cred: @lucassankey
@jayshetty has got so much wisdom. I’ve followed this guy for quite a while. I love how he’s using the same imagery of seeds and trees. ☺️ Seeds and Trees is not just a children’s book. It’s a book for the child at heart. The lessons in it are for all of us young or old. . And he’s right... being grateful is the key to contentment. If we start there, we will stay there. . What are you grateful for? Take a moment right now and think about it. Stop scrolling for 10 secs and then comment below. . I’m personally grateful for a loving wife @stephaniewalden who has served our sick kiddos over the past week and a half... and has served my flu-ridden self the past few days as well. . Be careful what you water, for it will surely grow. 💦🌱💦🌳 #seedsandtrees #gratitude #childrensbook #authorsofinstagram #bestsellingauthor #publicspeaker #empowerothers #kidlit #kidslit #lifelessons #theellenshow
|Brandon Walden| . There’s a lot of new coming around the corner. Websites, videos, etc. I’ve got some personal project stuff (hence the logo) I’ve been working on that is going to be releasing in the weeks to come. Also, @stephaniewalden and I have a really sweet family project with the girls we’ve been working on together as well. We can’t wait to begin to share it. . In so many ways the websites, pictures, videos and even this logo design feel like an unveiling of sorts. It’s like shining a light on something that has been hidden. It’s like we’ve been hidden. Well, being hidden is an interesting thing. Being hidden can produce a ton of fruit in our lives if the time is used well. It’s the secret work we do that no one else sees or notices. It’s the stuff beneath the surface. . The discipline . The pain . The process . The price . Sometimes you find yourself in a season where it seems that God himself has hidden you. Maybe you’re in one right now? Take heart and pay close attention to your inner growth and the soil around you as it begins to shift. Care for the seeds in your heart. The dreams. The callings. The gifting. Cultivate them in the darkness so that they can withstand the light when it’s placed on them. . Being hidden is one thing, but hiding is another thing. No one benefits from you hiding. There’s no reward in hiding. There’s no fruit. False humility never reveals the truth. . For so many years, and at so many times, I have hidden. I’ve hidden from my purpose. I’ve hidden from dreams. I’ve hidden from my gifts. I’ve often hidden behind a role or title I used to justify (false humility) me not stepping forward. We’re meant to be gifts to one another. Don’t hide your gifts. Don’t hide your heart. Don’t hide your dreams. . NO. MORE. HIDING. Say it with me. No more hiding. . Let me introduce myself. My name is Brandon Walden. I’m a husband, father, brother and friend. I’m also an Author and Speaker. Of course I am many other things. But these are the areas where I am most gifted. And it’s long past time for me to show up. . Stop hiding. Please introduce yourself below.
Sometimes we’re looking forward. Sometimes we’re looking up. Sometimes we’re looking down. Sometimes our eyes are on the path. But, we’re always hand in hand. . This past week has been brutal with sickness and colds for all the kiddos. It’s been hard to raise our heads. It’s been hard to come up for air. But, we’ve stayed hand in hand. It’s really that simple. We’re a team. . I think we make a good one! 😊 . . . . . . . . 📷 cred: Elle (9yrs old) Edit by @stephaniewalden . . . . t-shirt by @lovedfully
HOME. . . . . So glad to be home now. As much fun as it is exploring and venturing out and pursuing dreams... nothing brings me as much joy as returning HOME.
