Eight and a half years ago I took this photo of Gurma, one of the happiest and wisest men I’ve met. Every time I saw him he greeted me with a smile and warm embrace, he was always so thrilled about life and found joy in everyday. Gurma was the head grounds keeper at the school I was volunteering at. During my three and a half months in Ethiopia I would help Gurma with grounds keeping work here and there. One week the kids had a week off of school, I also happened to be the only volunteer there that week and Gurma had me work with him on the grounds. We would fill jerry cans with water and walk the barbed wire perimeter watering thorn plants that would eventually grow around the barbed wire fence to deter predators. The conversations, insight and wisdom from that week have stuck with me today and have been etched into my journal from my time in Ethiopia. I remember Gurma talking about Chicago and how he visited and loved Chicago. Seeing these photographs again remind me of how rare people are, and how every person in the world has a incredible contribution to this world wether they know it or not.
