To this day it’s one of the best viewing experiences I’ve ever had. I went into this movie totally unprepared for the magical, creative, violent, neon dream that took place before my eyes. HE SAID: In the immortal words of Public Enemy, ‘Don’t believe the hype’! Hereditary has some early promise with an unsettling tone and unhurried and assured direction but after a genuinely horrific and unexpected scene midway through the film it then descends into the usual cliche ridden beats that dominate most horror films and the late in the game twists and revelations are lazy and uninspired. Despite fully committed performances from Toni Collette and Alex Wolff as the mother and son caught up in the freaky goings on the film is devoid of any real sense of dread or scares. Gabriel Byrne is given nothing to do as the father and mostly just looks confused and bored, a boredom that I myself related to by the films end. . SHE SAYS: This film definitely is not what it is hyped to be. While it is super creepy, it is not a jump-out-of-your-seat horror. Instead, it is a disturbing look at family dysfunction, estrangement and grief. Toni Collette gives an appropriately manic performance as the distraught mother, and Alex Wolff is excellent as her spaced-out, vulnerable son. He does however seem unintentionally out of place in the family, and the rest of the cast are disappointingly underused. While it is shot with a detached, clinical style that intensifies the atmosphere, and there are some shocking moments, I was disappointed with the overall plot and development. There were themes and moments that should have been explored further, but alas, I don’t see this film being one that will be passed on to the next generation.

Regrettably Pegg peaked after Hot Fuzz with Run Fat Boy Run and Paul just not quite hitting the mark but still great fun. Patrick Melrose is not something I would normally pick up, but when @skyatlanticuk gifted me a copy the script for the first episode and the first two volumes of the novels I thought I would give it a try. Naturally, I started with the T.V series because who wouldn’t? Benedict Cumberbatch plays Patrick Melrose, and he plays him absolutely brilliantly! . . The story follows Patrick Melrose’s journey to recovery from drug addiction after the death of his abusive father. Even if the books aren’t your type of thing, I’d really recommend the TV show just to see Benedict Cumberbatch’s stunning acting and the beautiful way it has been filmed. . .
