Distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2016, this #Talisker #DistillersEdition is double matured in #Amoroso #sherry #casks and proves to be 10 years well spent. Very happy to have picked this one up the last time on #Skye and no doubt will look for future releases of the distillers editions as they come out. —————————————————— The nose has the familiar black pepper and sea salt found with Talisker along with semi-sweet dark chocolate. On the palate is where you pick up the the amoroso sherry casks with various notes of blackberries, black currants, dried apricot and the always accompanying Talisker smoke. Talisker 18 year old - Nose: Rich and sweet, orange, toffee, hazelnut and bonfire smoke Palate: Again quite sweet initially, with toffee and honey, followed by citrus notes, brine, pepper and smoke. Great complexity. Finish: Wonderfully long and spicy with more pepper and brine notes Talisker 18 is a fantastic whisky and a different experience to the 10 year old. It's incredibly well balanced between sweetness and that characteristic spiciness that makes Talisker whiskies so distinctive. Talisker Distillery Only Bottling - Nose: Malty, hints of the brine, smoke and peppery spice you would expect from a Talisker but I sense quite an active bourbon cask has been involved, with citrus, ginger and vanilla all very prominent and dominant over the distillate Palate: Sweet and quite fresh, citrus and vanilla again dominate, smoke also and it has to be said quite a lot of spicy oak notes with the distillery character again hanging back Finish: Becomes drier and slightly tannic with a little more of that peppery spice I was hoping for and some bbq smokiness lingering This distillery exclusive has only arrived on the shelf in the last couple of months and is "limited" to 6000 bottles. Sounds like quite a lot but considering the amount of traffic through the distillery the staff are confident it will sell out by the end of the year. Priced at 80 pounds (although with a 5 pound discount after doing the tour) it's not cheap. NAS like all Diageo distillery exclusives but like all others this is clearly fairly young stuff, I'd say between 6 and 8 years old. Very little information to be garnered (possibly due the fact that they probably couldnt then sell it for as much) but apparently it has had a triple maturation. Firstly in refill bourbon barrels, then on to heavily charred bourbon barrels and finally into some European oak that previously held amoroso sherry. I would have guessed first fill bourbon maturation throughout before being told this and certainly wouldn't have guessed that any sherry or European oak had been involved. It's a decent whisky and certainly different to others in the Talisker range but I think the price reflects the limited nature of the bottling rather than its age or quality.
