Amsterdam has 165 canals that cover 50km, crossed by 1,281 bridges. The main canals are laid out in a pattern of concentric half-circles. In the 16th century, Amsterdam became a global centre of commerce and expanded tremendously. To accommodate this growth, the system of canals was extended into its current distinctive pattern. In 2011, the "Seventeenth-Century Canal Ring Area of Amsterdam inside the Singelgracht" was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. • • Photo taken on December 1, 2017. 📸: Reuters/Yves Herman @theeconomist
