Happy Birthday RUSSELL! I can’t believe it’s been more than 30 years since I met u! Thanks for letting this scrappy jewish kid from #Miami who loved #hiphop into your world! U believed in me when no one else did! I am forever grateful for your generosity and kindness when I was just a 17 year old #NYU film student. U letting me shadow u and exposing me to your world was what I used on my climb up a very steep ladder. U have no idea how meaningful it was when u would ask me my opinion of a music video or a new song you made at #DefJam when I was just a kid, and how much it meant to me by letting me sit in on your meetings at #SONYMusic with the CEO #DonnieIenner as u fought for your yearly advances, or when u told #StanLathan to let me watch him while he directed #DefComedyJam, or when u let me sit in with #JohnSingleton pitching u #BoyzNTheHood before he directed it, when u told #BobSumner to let me shadow him as he cast the young black comedians for #DefComedy, when u took me on trips with u to St Barts and paid my way and introduced me to the most influential people in the business and told them how talented I was, when u took me to your dinner with @briangrazer the first time you met him and got him to talk to me all night because you knew how bad I wanted to be in the movie business, when u defended me to @lyorcohenr when I directed what he thought was a bad video for #ErickSermon and u yelled at him and told him it wasn’t so bad, when u told @andreharrell on the beach in Barbados that I was a real director and that he should hire me to direct videos for #UptownRecords, when u let me direct your #PhatFarm commercials when you had every hot video director wanting to direct them, when u made me one of your best men at your wedding to Kimora, when u loaned me the money I needed when I directed my first film #MoneyTalks because you knew I wasn’t getting paid, when Rush Hour came out and u told everyone that u knew me from when I was a kid and how proud u were. Im sure u don’t remember any of this because u are so damn old now but all these things meant the world to me and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in life! I love you @unclerush forever!
If my house #HilhavenLodge was burning down I would take one thing with me and that is my gift from #HughHefner The first issue of @playboy magazine published in #December #1953 but wasn’t even dated because #Hef wasn’t sure there would be a second issue. It is inscribed “To Brett-Who Shares The Dream... Hugh Hefner” I am humbled to have had the opportunity to collaborate with one of the greatest media and cultural pioneers in history who was responsible for the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom. He built Playboy into one of the most recognizable brands in history. So proud that he has entrusted me and my company @ratpacent with the rights to his life story! High hopes that @shadowjeff will be available one day soon to write it!!!
